Streaming Services Compared: Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz and Apple Music

Streaming Services Compared: Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz and Apple Music

Quality tiers: from compressed to lossless

Most people hear compressed audio: Spotify's standard 96–160 kbps Ogg, Apple Music's 256 kbps AAC. These discard highs and detail the ear barely notices. Lossless (FLAC, ALAC) is CD quality at 16-bit/44.1 kHz. Higher tiers include Hi-Res (24-bit/96 kHz+).

The main services

Spotify

Largest catalogue and best discovery algorithm, but its high tier (192 kbps Ogg) is still not lossless. The long-promised Spotify HiFi hasn't shipped. Best for discovery.

Apple Music

Now defaults to lossless ALAC (24-bit/192 kHz) and spatial audio (Dolby Atmos), included in the subscription. Excellent value for iPhone/Mac users. The catch is Apple's closed ecosystem and USB output limits when driving a DAC.

Tidal

HiFi tier offers CD-quality FLAC; HiFi Plus adds MQA and spatial. Tidal has close label relationships and exclusives. MQA is a controversial "folded" format claiming high resolution.

Qobuz

The French lossless service offers true FLAC (16/44.1 up to 24/192) without MQA packaging. Its catalogue leans jazz, classical and audiophile recordings. For listeners, Qobuz is currently the most transparent choice.

Can you hear the difference?

On phone earbuds or Bluetooth speakers, 128 kbps vs lossless is subtle. Once you use a wired DAC and good speakers, compressed music sounds "veiled" and "thin" — that's why enthusiasts insist on lossless.

Recommended listening setup

  • Wired USB DAC, not Bluetooth
  • Enable sample-rate switching so the DAC matches the source
  • Download rather than stream to avoid network-related downsampling
  • Use Roon, Audirvana or a dedicated streamer to manage the library

Recommended plan

Start with Apple Music lossless if you already subscribe; for serious classical and jazz, Qobuz Studio is a long-term investment. We can audition the same track on different services on one system.
