Integrated vs Separates: Which Should You Choose?

The case for integrated amplifiers

An integrated amp houses the preamp and power amp in one chassis: it saves space, removes a pair of interconnects and a mains cable, and the manufacturer has already optimised the matching. For compact Hong Kong living, an integrated is often the more practical choice.

The appeal of separates

Separates let you upgrade in steps — a new preamp now, a new power amp later, or dual monoblocks for more current. Sonically, separates usually offer better isolation and lower noise, at the cost of higher price and more cables.

When to choose separates

  • You plan to invest long-term and upgrade progressively
  • Your speakers are inefficient and need high power
  • You value ultimate noise and dynamics

When an integrated is smarter

  • Space is limited and you don't want multiple boxes
  • You'd rather concentrate the budget in one place
  • You want a simple system the whole family can use

Our advice

There's no absolute answer. Choose the speakers first, then decide based on budget and space. If you're unsure, bring your system list to an audition session and we'll compare the two paths with you.
