2025 DAC Buying Guide

The converter chip is only the start
Many DACs advertise flagship chips and extreme sample rates, but what you actually hear depends on the analogue output stage, the power supply and the clocking. The same chip implemented by two brands can sound worlds apart.
USB implementation makes or breaks it
If your source is a computer or streamer, asynchronous USB with good electrical isolation matters enormously. It dramatically reduces noise from the computer, giving a blacker background and clearer micro-dynamics.
Buying checklist
- Does it support your formats and rates (PCM / DSD)?
- Are the inputs complete (USB, optical, coaxial, Bluetooth)?
- Does it have a preamp stage, so you can drive a power amp directly?
- Power supply: linear or a high-quality switching design
Do you need a headphone amp?
If you own high-impedance headphones, a DAC with a built-in headphone amp — such as the NuPrime DAC-10H — is excellent value, serving both headphone and two-channel systems. If you only use speakers, put the budget into pure decoding quality instead.
In conclusion
Clarify your source and habits first, then choose the matching interfaces and features. Specs are a reference, but in the end you must listen. We can arrange an audition to compare several DACs side by side.
