Power Conditioning Guide: Filters, Isolation and Linear Supplies

Why Hong Kong systems need power conditioning
Hong Kong mains is chronically overloaded — air conditioners, lifts and appliance switching cause voltage dips and high-frequency noise. Appliances share circuits, so EMI/RFI pollution is severe. Good speakers amplify that noise, showing up as a dark but grainy background, loose bass and masked detail. Power conditioning is one of the highest-return upgrades for a Hong Kong audio system.
The three approaches
1. AC power filter
Removes high-frequency noise from the mains while preserving 50/60 Hz power. The NuPrime Pure AC series is a typical example, with five-stage LC filtering delivering hundreds of times of isolation. Compact and efficient, but limited against low-frequency voltage dips. Best for DACs, streamers and preamps.
2. Isolation transformer
Fully isolates the audio system from the mains via a transformer, also filtering noise. Heavy, bulky, about 90% efficient and expensive at high power. Best for ultra-sensitive analogue gear such as phono stages and preamps.
3. Linear power supply (LPS)
Converts 220V AC to low-voltage DC (e.g. 12V, 19V), directly replacing the device's stock switching adapter. The NuPrime LPS-212 and Siga Power 75 are typical. Most effective for DC-powered devices such as DACs, streamers and routers.
4. Integrated purification + isolation
Flagship units such as the XLO Reference Power Processor combine patented current-sharing, DC blocking and EMI filtering for mid-to-high-end separates.
Which gear benefits most?
- DACs, streamers, digital interfaces: most sensitive — upgrade first
- Preamps, phono stages: small signals, noise gets amplified downstream
- Headphone amps: background silence directly affects micro-detail
- Power amps, active speakers: less gain, but stable voltage helps dynamics
Buying considerations
Ensure rated current is enough: large power amps may need 10A+ — don't skimp and restrict dynamics. Count outlets: 6–8 is practical. Hong Kong is 220V — confirm the unit supports local voltage.
Don't do it all at once
A common route: start with a linear supply for the DAC, add a filter for the preamp, and only consider dedicated conditioning for the power amp later. Wrong order wastes budget.
Book an audition
The difference power conditioning makes must be heard. We offer audition sessions with NuPrime and XLO conditioners. Book a time, bring your system's recordings, and hear the background go black.
